How it All Started:
It all started WITH our kids and FOR our kids and other kids like them. Moreover, it all started as a math lesson. Math lesson and civics? Exactly! Combining STEM and civics, with a goal to decrease cognitive biases, sharpen critical thinking skills, and elucidate complex path of Electoral College as a mechanism to win US Presidency. But quickly, it evolved into something much bigger.
From a Lesson to a Movement
🧮 Math Meets Civics: What started as “Electoral College Swing States Bingo” course and after-school program, became a powerful, hands-on way to teach students this complex pathway to winning a U.S. Presidential election.
🎲 From Paper to Board Games: Immediately, the excitement grew. To make experience even more engaging, we created paper-based games. Those paper-based games were very popular. As a result, we choose 8 most interesting games to play (except one) and created board-games.
During the election years 2016 and 2020, students were competing in packed MPRs (Multi Purpose Room), strategizing how to win US Presidency. Furthermore, these experiences were electrifying, memorable, team-based competitions.
💻 From Board Games to Digital Games: A decade of dedication and grass-roots impact led to something even more innovative and scalable—Election Lab Online. Thanks to our persistence, resilience and perseverance, we applied for and ultimately won prestigious grants that allowed us to build online games.
Talking about blood, sweat and tears put into a passion project that grew into something much bigger than ourselves! And we didn’t stop there. We aim to create a movement.
As Thomas A Edison noted: “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Obviously, we tried many times.
Gratitude & Recognition
Besides our leadership, I owe gratitude to my amazing & innovative ed tech and creative team. This journey would not have been possible without them. In addition, we are grateful for the support of prestigious grant funding.
🏆 As I noted above, we won competitive grants from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences, standing out among other visionary, brilliant impact-driven entrepreneurs. I could not be more thrilled and proud about that achievement.
🚀 In addition, those hard-to-get grants helped transform our passion into an award-winning EdTech tool—making civics education fun, engaging, and transformative.
A Heartfelt Thank You
I also want to express a heartfelt thank you to so many others including:
- Our students, players and learners who we worked with and taught over the last 12+ years. Thank you for embracing this experience and making it your own. Thank you for playing and learning and of course, passing it forward. We are thrilled it made a difference in your lives.
- In addition to students, there are number of Educators and Institutions that recognized the power of game-based learning.
- To conclude, I need to also thank our colleagues, friends, and family who have been cheer-leading & supporting us over the years.
To briefly sum up, I am thankful for it all and for you all. You know who you are.
Evidently, our Election Lab Journey has been a bold journey of resilience, innovation, and persistence—and we’re just getting started.
The IMPACT of Election Lab Online
Our impact ranges from reaching and educating elementary school to middle school, high school students and beyond! We had college students, graduate, postgraduate professionals play as well as educators at all levels of education.
Evidently, our players have walked away with deeper knowledge and strategic thinking skills. Some of them were amazed at the clarity and insight they gained after playing ELO.
In addition, some players were even inspired to vote after experiencing the game’s real-world impact!
In conclusion: this is more than a game—it’s a civic learning revolution.
